2. On behalf of the Committee on Demographic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences we support the call "What should be done for the health care system under pandemic" by the experts from the Institute of Public Health (the Medical College of the Jagiellonian University in Cracow), the CASE Scientific Foundation and the Consultative Council of the Polish Society of Public Health who are anxious about Poles. The call has been published on the Institute of Public Health webpage https://izp.wnz.cm.uj.edu.pl/pl/blog/co-nalezy-zrobic-dla-systemu-ochrony-zdrowia-w-sytuacji-pandemii/#.
The COVID-19 pandemic as well as the growing threat of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, signalled in mortality research since two decades, along with the declining life expectancy of Poles since 2017 call for a fundamental change to the role of the health care system both today as we are struggling with the COVID-19 coronavirus as well as tomorrow as we have to prepare for new challenges. The call combines both perspectives.
